Trigger: subclaim_change. The shower-cutoff subclaim (63767666-e476-4f7b-8cb5-22a2f9ee34c9) received its first assessment: contested (confidence 0.8, credence 0.5). Materiality judgment: the contest within that subclaim runs between an established angular-ordered result (300-500 MeV scheme-dependent shift) and a rival line placing the generator mass within a few hundred MeV of the pole mass, with the pT-ordered dipole-shower case unestablished. Both horns place the displacement at the few-hundred-MeV scale, which is exactly what this parent claim asserts (shifts only of order Lambda_QCD), so the dispute is orthogonal to the parent's parametric bound; the notifying steward's own triage note said dependents using the subclaim for the weaker small-shift point are largely unaffected, and this claim is such a dependent. The one real erosion is scope (the anchor is now established only in qualified angular-ordered form), which justifies holding confidence at 0.75 rather than raising it. Status remains supported, credence 0.7. Re-evaluated the "Quantitative infrared-sensitivity studies" argument to reflect the contested premise (still holds_with_caveats); re-recorded the "No rigorous field-theoretic relation" evaluation unchanged, as its premise's standing did not change. No structural change: decomposition already captures the dependency. No web search: the notification fully characterized the change and no external evidence would alter the materiality judgment. Not notifying dependents: status, confidence, and credence are unchanged from the prior assessment, so there is no material change to propagate. Importance left at 0.35 (notable): a supporting empirical premise inside the live MC-mass-interpretation debate, correctly calibrated.

Reassessed; argument evaluations backfilled; no status change

Triggered as structure_and_assess but the claim arrived fully structured (three subclaims under two named arguments with written forms) with a prior supported assessment at 0.7; the operative event was the subclaim change on the contradicts subclaim 222a785a ("The Monte Carlo top-quark mass lacks a precise field-theoretic definition"), now SUPPORTED (0.8, credence 0.88) on its literal reading. Materiality judgment: not material to status. The subclaim's supported verdict rests on the literal definitional point that both interpretation camps grant, and explicitly defers the size of the gap to the quantitative claims; this claim asserts exactly that size. The objection undercuts the provability of the "only" without exhibiting any shift larger than order Lambda_QCD, so the mutual supported statuses are coherent. Re-recorded the assessment (supported, confidence nudged 0.70 -> 0.75 since the against-argument's now-assessed premise confirms it is an undercutting rigor objection rather than a counter-measurement; credence 0.7 unchanged), fixing register defects in the prior trace (first-person voice, no inline subclaim links). Backfilled the two missing argument evaluations, both holds_with_caveats: the for-argument depends on its two still-unassessed quantitative premises and on those effects being dominant; the against-argument is valid but only undercuts confidence, it does not contradict the stated size. Kept decomposition as-is: the three subclaims cover the load-bearing quantitative evidence and the strongest objection; no new dependencies invented. Canonical form retained (18 words, neutral, both sides would accept it as what is in dispute). Importance confirmed at 0.35 with contestation 0.5 recorded separately. No web search: importance is notable, the prior assessment is recent and thorough, and the triggering change was absorbable on its face. No dependent notification: status unchanged, nothing material to propagate. Marginal yield 0.4: a deeper read of the generator-comparison spreads (Herwig vs Pythia, observable by observable) could sharpen confidence but is unlikely to flip the status.

The claim concerns how strongly the top-quark mass parameter of NLO-matched parton-shower generators, the quantity that direct LHC measurements actually determine, is affected by the infrared elements of those generators: the shower cutoff that ends perturbative evolution and the hadronization model that takes over below it. The available quantitative studies converge on shifts at the few-hundred-MeV scale, consistent with the stated order-Lambda_QCD size. An explicit analysis of angular-ordered showers found that the infrared cutoff displaces the generator mass from the pole mass by a calculable amount of roughly half a GeV, turning it into a cutoff-dependent short-distance mass rather than introducing any GeV-scale ambiguity. Calibration of the generator mass against hadron-level QCD predictions for e+e- observables finds agreement with the MSR mass at 1 GeV within about 200 MeV, and comparisons of NLO+PS generators of increasing accuracy find that shower and hadronization variations move the mass extracted from the reconstructed top peak by at most a few hundred MeV. The credible reservation is not that anyone has demonstrated larger shifts, but that the bound cannot yet be made rigorous: the generator mass parameter lacks a precise field-theoretic definition, so the few-hundred-MeV figure rests on modelling, calibration in simplified settings, and numerical comparisons rather than a first-principles calculation, and some studies find that different shower programs can differ by amounts approaching a GeV for particular observables. The question would be settled by higher-accuracy showers with controlled logarithmic and mass-scheme accuracy, or by calibration studies extended to hadron-collider conditions; at present the weight of the evidence favors the claim at its stated parametric size.
