The estimate comes from Doroshenko and collaborators (Nature Astronomy, 2022), who fit six years of XMM-Newton spectra of the central compact object in the supernova remnant HESS J1731-347 and derived a mass of about 0.77 solar masses and a radius of about 10.4 km. If correct, this would be the lightest neutron star known, or possibly a strange quark star, since values this low sit outside what standard formation theory predicts. The derivation rests on two premises: that the spectrum is emitted by a uniform-temperature carbon atmosphere covering the whole surface, and that the remnant lies at about 2.5 kiloparsecs, a distance taken from the Gaia parallax of a star thought to be associated with the remnant. Both premises are credibly disputed. The carbon-atmosphere model does fit the data well, but hydrogen-atmosphere models with hot spots fit comparably well and imply substantially larger, ordinary masses, so the low values are not uniquely determined by the spectra. The distance is also uncertain: kinematic estimates based on interstellar absorption place the remnant at 3.2 kiloparsecs or beyond, which would raise the inferred mass and radius. More broadly, inferred compact-star masses and radii depend strongly on the assumed distance and atmosphere composition, and conventional supernova mechanisms cannot readily produce neutron stars well below one solar mass, which makes the headline numbers surprising on prior grounds, though exotic-matter interpretations and unusual formation channels have been proposed in response. The estimate has passed basic consistency checks and anchors an active theoretical literature, but it has not been independently confirmed, and the authors of the leading critique regard the ordinary-mass alternative as equally viable. Resolution would come from evidence that discriminates between the atmosphere models, such as detection or exclusion of pulsations tied to a hot spot, or an independent determination of the remnant's distance.
