Sanna, Schwarz and Stocker (2002) found that participants asked to list many thoughts about how an outcome could have been different showed stronger, not weaker, hindsight bias, and traced the reversal to metacognitive difficulty: when generating counter-thoughts feels hard, the difficulty is read as evidence that the favored conclusion was right after all (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/12018501/). This ease-of-retrieval mechanism is well established in Schwarz's broader research program and is the standard cited boundary condition on consider-the-opposite debiasing: ask for a few counter-reasons, not many.
